Disco queen Donna Summer, who sang pulsing anthems such as Last Dance, Love to Love You Baby and Bad Girl, has died at the age of 63 after a long battle with cancer.
The five-time Grammy Award winner, who came to prominence just as disco was burgeoning in the 1970s, passed away in Florida, her family said in a statement.
"Early this morning, we lost Donna Summer Sudano, a woman of many gifts, the greatest being her faith.
"While we grieve her passing, we are at peace celebrating her extraordinary life and her continued legacy.
"Words truly can't express how much we appreciate your prayers and love for our family at this sensitive time."
Often called the Queen of Disco, she inspired stars like Diana Ross, Duran Duran, Kylie Minogue and David Bowie. Music journalist Paul Gambaccini told Sky News that Summer will have a "lasting legacy".
"She never set out to be what she became. She came over to Europe to be a musical theatre actress and wound up being Queen of Disco because she met Pete Bellotte and Giorgio Moroder.
"She was for about five years just unstoppable."
Dionne Warwick said in a statement that she was sad to lose a great performer and "dear friend".
"My heart goes out to her husband and her children," Warwick said.
"Prayers will be said to keep them strong."
Summer was born LaDonna Adrian Gaines on December 31, 1948, in Boston.
She began singing early in the church choir and by her teens had formed several musical groups.
Her first album, Lady Of The Night, arrived in 1974 in Europe, and 1975's Love To Love You Baby brought her worldwide fame
Her song Last Dance, in the 1978 disco film Thank God It's Friday, won Summer her first Grammy.
Summer's soaring vocals on She Works Hard For The Money brought her a Best Pop Vocal Performance Award in 1984.
In the mid-1980s, Summer encountered controversy when she was accused of making anti-gay comments related to AIDS.
She claimed she had been misquoted but not before thousands of her records were returned and dance clubs boycotted her music.
Summer holds the record for most consecutive double albums to hit number one on the Billboard charts (three) and was the first female to have four number one singles in a 12-month period.
In 2008, Summer launched a comeback and released Crayons, her first album in 17 years.
She also performed on American Idol that year with its top female contestants.
Summer leaves behind a husband, three daughters and four grandchildren.

Isla Fisher: 'Jay-Z music used on set of 'The Great Gatsby'
Kiss FM LIve
Isla Fisher has revealed that director Baz Lurhmann used the music of Jay-Z on the set of upcoming drama The Great Gatsby.
The film, shot entirely in 3D, is an adaptation of the 1925 novel by F Scott Fitzgerald about the tragic story of a mysterious young millionaire named Jay Gatsby.
Fisher revealed that Luhrmann played Jay-Z's music underneath scenes, telling MTV: "On my first day he had Jay-Z pumped up full and we did the entire scene with Jay-Z in our ear on full blast while acting, and it was just so liberating."
The former Home and Away actress stars in the film as Myrtle Wilson, appearing alongside Tobey Maguire, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Carey Mulligan.
The Great Gatsby has just wrapped shooting in Sydney, Australia.
It is scheduled for release on December 25 in the US and December 26 in the UK.
Kasabian: 'Lana Del Rey's Goodbye Kiss cover is f**king beautiful'
Kasabian's Serge Pizzorno has spoken about Lana Del Rey's cover of their song 'Goodbye Kiss'.
Pizzorno told NME that the cover, which Del Rey performed for BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge, is "f**king beautiful" and "a really nice gesture". He said: "I'm really proud. Obviously we covered one of hers, 'Video Games', so it was quite a sweet thing to do back. It's a really nice gesture. It's proper old-school."
Del Rey has said that she found Kasabian's music through former boyfriends.
"All of my boyfriends had loved Kasabian and I'd never listened to them," she explained. "I started and I really like this song. I love this song and I love the melody, I love the way the boys sing it."
Del Rey posted two enigmatic tweets on Saturday which many have taken as confirmation that 'Carmen' will be her next single.
Kelly Clarkson shoots 'Dark Side' video
KISS FM LIVE
The singer, who recently celebrated her 30th birthday, was spotted filming scenes for the third single from Stronger in Los Angeles on Saturday (April 28). The original American Idol winner fooled around with friends by taking photos of her jumping in the air while on set.
Speaking of the video last month, she said: "I always like to come up with, sometimes just a concept of visually what I'd like to see and then let the directors run with it because they're so creative and they usually have great ideas.
"I think it's always better when more people are involved and you have all these ideas flowing. I'm excited. It's going to be different to what you probably think."
Clarkson recently announced plans to co-headline 28 shows across North America with The Fray over the summer.
